Tobramycin is widely administered amino glycoside antibiotic for ocular and Otic infections because of its efficiency to eliminating gram-negative bacteria especially pseudomonas species.
AS OPHTHALMIC: Tobramycin ophthalmic solution remains stable for several weeks in varied solutions with an ability to get absorbed in aqueous humor.
AS OTIC: In the form of ear drops Tobram is used to treat outer ear infections.
Mode of Action:
Tobramycin readily binds with the ribosomal pair disabling it to produce m-Rna responsible for the protein formation in bacteria thus ensuring cell death. It also destabilizes the bacterial membrane by binding the 16s r-Rna thus the functional integrity of the bacterial cell membrane appears to be disrupted.
Indication and Usage
Conjunctivitis, Blepharitis, pediatric ocular infections, post eye operation, ear canal infections and vision threatening bacterial infections.
Dosage and Administration
Instill one or two drops into the affected eye(s)/ ear(s) every four hours. Or as directed by the Specialist
Warning and Precaution
Indiscriminate and prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non susceptible organisms, including fungal infections, glaucoma and cataract.
If irritation persists discontinue its usage and contact your physician.
Adverse Effect:
Eye ointments usually cause your vision to blur for a few minutes after application
May temporarily sting when first applied
If allergic to the drug, symptoms include: rash, itching, redness, watery eyes and swelling.
